The patience in Natsume's voice had taken on a talking-to-frightened-animals flavour. Nyanko's fur bristled. "You wouldn't know," he replied, raising his head haughtily (it helped not to look down) and digging his claws a little deeper into the branch.
"Don't cats always land on their feet, anyway? Come on, Nyanko. I promise I'll catch you. Besides, you're meant to have nine lives--"
Nyanko would later maintain that he had hurled himself out of the tree and at Natsume for the express reason of shutting him up, and it was a very graceful landing, thank you very much, and he had barely let his claws out at all.
"Ow," Natsume replied. And, a bit later, "You need to lose weight."
But he let Nyanko stay half-curled in his arms all the way back home, and since Nyanko wasn't even a real cat, there was nothing demeaning or pet-like about it at all. Obviously not.
